COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY, RED
Confident and charismatic or rich and sensuous

Red can be a polarising colour, it has associations of always being bold and dominant which can make using it in the home feel overwhelming. However the reality is the specturm of this primary colour can evoke a wide range of emotions - from bold confidence and fiery drama to relaxed warmth and calming cosiness – and it is truly adaptable to a wide range of aesthetics and spaces.

When it comes to decorating with red, gone are the days of drenched Y2K interiors, with this hue now a go to for more nuanced and sophisticated designs. Thanks to the unexpected red theory it has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, with 2025’s trending reds including bold cherry red and rich hues of burgundy. Whether used sparingly for a pop of colour or as the main feature in a room, red has the power to transform a space’s mood and style making it a timeless choice for home decor.

The winning wall

Using red as an accent colour will allow you to incorporate this bold hue into your home without having to commit to painting an entire room. A dining room is a great space to try an accent wall - it creates a focal point, brings drama to the space and showcases style and sophistication in a room you’ll most often show off to guests. For the ultimate luxe feel, ensure the lighting is layered and warm to set the mood and finish the space with rich materials such as velvet and dark wood. Red accent walls also work particularly well if you are working with a long narrow space, like a hallway, as you can use this statement colour at the end to draw the eye through and make the area feel more spacious.
Punchy Pops

A scarlet pop where it’s least expected is an age-old secret among designers and creatives, more commonly known as the unexpected red theory. From pillar box to burgundy, a dash of this bold tone via artwork, furniture or the inside of a painted window frame, results in a scheme that’s both grounding and dynamic. Adding a bright red wall light or running a playful border across the top and bottom of a midnight blue wall has an instantly smartening effect - like adding a statement jewel to a streamlined outfit.

Romantic Roses

Red and pink make the ultimate comforting and romantic colour combination when used in the home. The two ‘sister shades’ sit next to one another on a traditional colour wheel so combine effortlessly to create a harmonious feel in interiors. On its own, pink is inviting and warm, creating a sense of intimacy in a space and the addition of red alongside it makes for a combination that feels both relaxed yet also a little vibrant. Try this look by pairing pale pink walls with bold red furnishings and accessories. The softness of the pastel hue will contrast perfectly with the striking red accents to create a cosy yet charming design scheme.
Dark Desire

Red is quite often a strong colour, that can sometimes overpower small spaces such as home offices or hallways. For a more understated look, opt for warmer sun-baked brick or cooler crimson-kissed violets to provide a muted quality that brings depth and elegance. These more earthy colours blend beautifully with browns, forest greens and taupes. Complete the look with mid-century artwork, wood accents and textural wall finishes for inimitable verve. For a more simplistic approach, pair with crisp white walls and use black to highlight architectural elements- this use of contrasting colours grounds the space and creates balance.
Candy Stripes

An easy and inexpensive way to liven up any space, a simple striped motif can be used in many ways from subtle accents, through to hero walls. For an eye-catching finish, use a vibrant tone of classic cherry red in a candy stripe pattern - this bold combination is a great way to take your walls from bland to bold and instantly uplift the room, making it feel brighter and cheerful.
Playful Places

Decorating kids’ rooms can be a lot of fun but knowing that the space will be used to both relax and play, balance is key. It’s important to create a space that feels inspiring and exciting for young imaginations with plenty of colour, while ensuring it is also calming when it comes time to wind down. Red paint is hugely versatile in both ages and genders so is often used as a statement colour to add playfulness to a kids or games rooms. Matte sheens are of course very popular, however in a child’s room, opt for an Eggshell sheen on the walls. This will give your walls an extra boost of durability and also give stronger colour depth and presence.
